How it works

Zigbee builds a network and application layer over IEEE 802.15.4 radios. A coordinator establishes a network, routers forward traffic, and end devices can communicate through a parent while spending much of their time asleep.

The useful power-saving distinction is between an always-listening routing device and an end device that wakes only when needed. A battery-powered switch may sleep between actions, while a permanently powered lamp or gateway can remain available to relay messages.

On the bench

This replaces an old overview that mixed historical specifications with unrelated inserted links. Actual frequencies, security, profiles, and interoperability must be checked against the chosen stack and hardware.
